Raven (aka The Universal Underdog) is a Californian spoken word artist living in Ireland.
His poetry has appeared in print in the U.S. and Ireland in magazines, anthologies and in his collection The Living, the Dead and Americans. The soul of his work, however, is in live performance, beginning with political street theatre in his native San Francisco in the ‘90s and continuing in Ireland with charismatic solo sets and as an MC in the improvisational jazz/hip hop ensemble Mixtapes From The Underground. Since his move to Ireland he has rapidly become one of the most popular and highly regarded spoken word artists in the country, featuring on both spoken word and music stages at festivals (Electric Picnic, Body & Soul, Flat Lake and Waterford Literary festivals, etc.), and on the radio (RTE and Newstalk). He has also performed internationally in the U.S., U.K. and South Africa – including the Glastonbury and Poetry Africa festivals. Intense and lyrical, his work riffs on spirit, politics, identity, human nature and the conflicting realms of asphalt and earth.
